Beginning

In the Netherlands I, Nynke Zaal founder of Hope for Life, worked for many years as a family counselor. My work experience is mainly working with families and working with young adults with mild intellectual disabilities who started living independently after leaving social care at the age of 18.
When I spent in 2009 six months in Smiltene, Latvia, to support a local church there, I mostly spent time with women and youth. I emigrated to Latvia in December 2010.

Through all the meetings and contacts, the realization came that many women have not learned how to be a wife and mother and how to give substance to their lives as such due to a lack of attention and support during their upbringing. It is difficult for young vulnerable women in particular to develop because they have not been given an example in life.

There is much suffering and hopelessness in Latvia, especially among the teenagers and young women. Many of them have (had) a difficult home situation and are dealing with poverty, unemployment and abuse. As a result, there is a high risk of becoming homeless, ending up in prostitution and / or becoming addicted with all its consequences. It has become clear to us that there is a need for support and empowerment for women.

In Latvia there is little or no safety net for this vulnerable group of young women once they leave an orphanage or crisis shelter or come out of a difficult home situation. It is precisely then that they need support because they have their whole lives ahead of them and they can still break the pattern. The fate of these women touched us deeply and led us to set up a foundation so that faith and hope for the future can be offered with guidance, support and / or a temporary safe place to live. We also want to join local initiatives and offer expertise on the broadest possible basis.

The name of the foundation is Hope for Life, in Latvian “CERĪBA DZĪVEI” (hereinafter – the foundation). The foundation was established indefinitely on November 11, 2013 in Smiltene in Latvia. Currently the foundation is located in Ogre.
